Bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infections in dogs and cats. For example, in 2022, UTIs will afflict approximately 14% of the canine population. Although they often affect older canines (7 years old and older), younger pets can also develop UTIs. All breeds are susceptible, with females being more prone than males. It is because male dogs and cats have a longer urethra, so it takes bacteria longer to travel upwards.

What Is a Urinary Tract Infection in Dogs and Cats?

The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, ureters (tubes that carry urine to the bladder for storage), the bladder, the male pet prostate (which encircles the bladder neck), and the urethra that conducts urine outside the body. A urinary tract infection could involve any of these areas though most commonly when we speak of urinary tract infection or UTI, we mean “bladder infection.” Because bladder infections are localized to the bladder, there are rarely signs of infection in other body systems: no fever, no appetite loss, and no change in the blood tests. (If the infection ascends to the kidneys, we may find other signs and other lab work changes. While a kidney infection is technically also a urinary tract infection, vets usually use the term pyelonephritis to describe a kidney infection.)

What Causes UTIs in Dogs and Cats?

The area around animals’ genitalia is exposed to bacteria from urine, feces, and other types of debris. An infection develops when bacteria travel through the urethra and enter the bladder. Escherichia coli has been the most frequently isolated bacteria causing UTIs in dogs and cats, up to 30%. However, several other types of bacteria can also cause infection, such as Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., Proteus spp., and Klebsiella spp. See the table below to learn the types of bacteria and how often they were found in an experimental group of dogs.

Bacteria Number of Dogs Percantage
Escherichia coli 35 63.6
Staphylococcus intermedius 8 14.5
Enterococcus spp. 3 5.5
Proteus spp. 3 5.5
Other bacteria 6 10.9

When a pet is very young, elderly, or has a weakened immune system due to an illness, it is more challenging for the body to fight off infection.

If the infection makes its way up into the kidneys, more severe issues like kidney infection (pyelonephritis), kidney stones, or even kidney failure may occur.

Are Some Dogs and Cats Predisposed to UTIs?

UTIs can develop in any animal at any age, but some factors might make your dog more likely to experience an infection.

Female animals are more likely to suffer from an infection, along with dogs that suffer from other health problems, such as chronic kidney disease and Cushing’s disease.

Animals with diabetes, an endocrine or hormonal disorder, animals receiving chemotherapy or immunosuppressive drugs, and pets on long-term cortisone-type medications are at a higher risk for developing UTIs. In these cases, your veterinarian may recommend regular urine tests to check for signs of infection.

Types of Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections can be classified as uncomplicated or complicated:

  • Uncomplicated infection is typically the first occurrence of a urinary tract infection in an otherwise healthy dog. An uncomplicated UTI is easily treatable with medications.
  • Complicated infection is a bacterial infection resulting from an anatomic or functional urinary tract abnormality that predisposes the pet to persistent infection, recurrent infection, or treatment failure. Pyelonephritis, bladder stones, and prostatitis are some examples of complicated bacterial urinary tract infections.

Recurrent UTIs which develop 3 or more times during a year can be considered reinfection or relapse.

  • Reinfection is when infection returns within six months after completing a successful treatment. The urinary tract has now become infected with a different bacterial organism.
  • Relapse is caused by the same species of bacteria as the previous infection and occurs within six months of completing treatment.

What Are Struvite Stones in Dogs and Cats?

Struvite stones are one of the dogs’ most common bladder stones. Struvite is a hard mineral deposit that forms in urine when magnesium and phosphate stick together. On their own, struvite crystals in the urine are relatively common and may not be a problem. However, in animals, struvite stones usually form in urine infected with ammonium-producing bacteria. This raises the urine pH, causing the struvite crystals to clump together to form a stone.

Symptoms of bladder stones in dogs and cats include:

  1. Blood in the urine.
  2. Straining to urinate.
  3. Abdominal pain.
  4. Frequent urination, but only urinating a small amount each time.
  5. Urinating in odd places.
  6. Urinating in the house (dogs)
  7. Urinating outside the litterbox (cats)
  8. Licking the urinary opening.

Risk Factors

By 2022 according to the Veterinary Information Network, 85% of dogs with struvite stones are female, and the average age of an affected dog is 2.9 years old.

Shih Tzus, Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terrier, Labrador Retrievers, and Dachshunds appear to be at an increased risk of forming struvite stones. These stones are often associated with lower urinary tract infections in dogs and cats.

  • excessive drinking;
  • nausea, vomiting;
  • incontinence/inability to hold urine for a short time;
  • bloody urine (though an infection must either involve a special organism, a bladder stone, a bladder tumor or be particularly severe to make urine red to the naked eye);
  • lack of appetite;
  • licking around genitals;
  • fever;
  • back or/and suprapubic pain;
  • passing small amounts of urine very frequently;
  • burning or painful feeling after urination;
  • acting uncomfortable or distressed while urinating;
  • lethargy.
Symptoms of UTI Frequency Percentage

UTI symptoms may sometimes be indicative of something far worse going on in your pet’s body. If your dog is experiencing the following, bring them to your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Bloody Urine

One of the more alarming urinary symptoms is blood in your animal’s urine. While this can be indicative of a UTI, bloody urine can also be a sign of several severe or potentially fatal conditions, such as:

  • poisoning;
  • kidney disease;
  • trauma;
  • cancer;
  • bladder stones.

Difficulty Urinating

If your dog is having difficulty urinating or is not passing any urine, this warrants a visit to the emergency room. If left untreated, this can be fatal for your dog and can also suggest several severe issues such as:

  • obstructions in the urinary tract;
  • scar tissue in the urinary tract;
  • spinal cord injuries or disease;
  • trauma;
  • cancer;
  • prostate disease.

Changes in Urination Habits

Paying close attention to your pet’s urination habits is crucial for their well-being. Any abrupt or noticeable changes in their bathroom habits warrant a discussion with your veterinarian.

Accidents in the house or increased frequency of urination may be symptoms of diabetes, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease, cancer, trauma, and urinary tract infections.

Signs of Bladder Stones in Dogs

Dogs with bladder stones may display signs associated with a lower urinary tract disease, or they might not show any signs at all. Signs that your dog may have a bladder stone include:

  • straining to urinate;
  • bloody or discolored urine;
  • pungent urine;
  • needing to urinate more often than usual;
  • having accidents in the house;
  • licking their genital area more than usual;
  • having lower energy or a reduced appetite;
  • vomiting.

Dosage Sizes

The veterinarian must prescribe the dosage, but the typical dose is:

  • Cats: Administer orally, from 250 to 500 mg daily, depending on the animal’s size.
  • Dogs: Administer orally, from 500 to 1,000 mg daily, depending on the animal’s size.

The use of the Metipower paste occurs daily unless the veterinarian has issued other prescriptions. Then, the medication can be carried out according to the instructions if it does not cause side effects in the animal or if the pet is currently healthy.

Withdrawal Times

The drug withdrawal rate from the animal’s body depends on the animal’s size. The manufacturer does not specify the exact withdrawal time. Make sure to consult the vet.

Important Safety Information for Pet Owners

Not all urinary tract infections are alike, so the course of treatment can vary.

An uncomplicated UTI is usually treated with a 7 to 14-day course of appropriate medication in dogs. Noticeable improvements should occur within the first few days, and the medication should be taken in its entirety as instructed by your vet. Complicated infection in dogs may last longer – usually 3 to 6 weeks.

Most cats will fully recover within 7-10 days of developing a urinary tract infection, but they may need to remain on a canned diet for longer.

A new urine sample is cultured approximately a week after treatment to ensure the infection is gone. If it has not cleared up or a new one has developed, there is usually a reason, such as an underlying condition.

You should always consult your veterinarian if you suspect your animal has a UTI. In addition, remember that UTI symptoms can mimic other severe health conditions.

A bladder infection is not contagious.

Bladder infection is somewhat unusual in cats under ten years and neutered male dogs.

A lack of apparent symptoms does not mean that no treatment is needed. Some animals are not observed closely enough for their caretakers to recognize symptoms. In addition, some patients are elderly, immune suppressed from medications or other medical conditions, or have complicating factors, such as a history of bladder stones. For these patients, it may be best to take a proactive approach and not wait for obvious symptoms.

The following tips can assist in recovery:

  • During treatment, it’s vital to increase your pet’s water intake; fluid consumption helps flush out bacteria during urination. That’s why provide access to fresh, clean water and a diet that includes wet food (which contributes to overall water intake).
  • Administer medication on schedule and ensure your pet gets the prescribed dose. Do not stop medication even if your dog is showing improvement; you must administer the entire course of medication exactly as directed.
  • Ensure your pet is taken outside regularly to urinate: “holding it in” for too long regularly can contribute to, or worsen, UTIs.
  • Keep an eye on your pet’s behavior. If there is no improvement after 48 hours of starting treatment, contact your vet.

Palatability

Methipower Oral Paste is highly palatable and highly nutritional. First, place a small amount of Methipower on the animal’s nose to stimulate taste interest. Then, the pet will lick it with its tongue.

Dogs: 1 tsp daily

Cats: ½ – 1tsp daily

Veterinary Prescription

If you suspect UTI in your dog or cat, contact your vet to check your animal and get a prescription.

A urine sample needs to be collected and tested. A urinalysis and a urine culture can be performed simultaneously if the dog shows symptoms of an infection.

  1. A urinalysis is an important screening tool that examines the chemical properties of the urine sample. For example, it shows an excess protein in the urine and allows a visual inspection of the urine to look for things like crystals, cells, or bacteria. This test may be performed “in-house” by your veterinarian or an outside laboratory. Results are usually available within 24 hours or less.
  2. A urine culture is the only test that confirms a urinary tract infection is present. Urine is spun in a centrifuge to separate out the solids from the liquid. The solid part, known as the sediment, is placed in a container and incubated for bacterial growth. The confirmation of bacteria allows for further examination, including whether the bacteria are known to cause disease or are likely harmless. The antibiotic profile helps doctors determine which antibiotics will work against the infection. Urine culture results are typically available within 3 to 5 days.

Contraindications and Warnings

  1. Keep in mind that if your animal is not healthy and its immunity is currently weakened for unknown reasons, don’t use this paste. First, take tests, consult a veterinarian, and you can start Methipower therapy if everything is fine.
  2. The paste is unsuitable for pregnant or nursing animals.
  3. Large doses can cause gastrointestinal upset when taken on an empty stomach.
  4. Methipower is unsuitable for animals under the age of 1 year.

Side Effects

Methipower oral paste has specific restrictions to avoid any side effects. Use with caution in severely debilitated animals. Giving the medication to pets with severe liver or kidney damage is not recommended. Large doses or administering the drug to a pet with an empty stomach may cause gastrointestinal distress. Do not give Methipower to a pregnant or nursing dog or cat.

Storage

Store below 30°C, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.

You can easily order it for your animals online. It is the easiest way to get this medicine for the lowest price.

What to Do if I Missed Giving a Pet That Medicine?

Just continue therapy. Give the usual dose next time, do not double the dose. If the animal has any health problems, contact the veterinarian immediately.

How Does an Indoor Pet Get a UTI?

Crystals, stones, or debris can gradually build up in your pet’s urethra – the tube connecting the bladder to the outside of your cat’s body – or bladder. Other common causes of lower urinary tract issues in cats include incontinence due to excessive water consumption, weak bladder, and spinal cord issues.

Can Stress Cause UTI in Pets?

Factors such as emotional or environmental stress, multi-pet households, and abrupt changes in daily routine may also increase the risk that a pet will develop FLUTD.

Is UTI Painful for Pets?

Urinary tract issues can be very painful for your pet. You must seek treatment as soon as possible if you notice these signs. A blockage can also become a life-threatening emergency if left untreated.

Can Pets Recover From UTI on Their Own?

Although some urinary tract infections can heal on their own, veterinarians prescribe treatment if needed. Following all the instructions a vet gives you is the best way to ensure that a relapse or reinfection does not occur. Reinfection could point to an underlying or more serious issue.

How Can I Help My Pet Recover From a UTI?

Increase your animal’s water consumption, give medication to relieve symptoms, ask your vet about the diet, expel small stones through the urethra; use urinary acidifiers, fluid therapy, and urinary catheter or surgery for male pets to remove urethral blocks.

Why Won’t My Pet’s UTI Go Away?

If the symptoms show no sign of improvement in a few days, talk to a veterinarian. Also, see a vet immediately if your cat seems to be in pain or cannot urinate. This could be a sign of urethral obstruction, which can be fatal if not treated within 24 to 48 hours.

Why Does My Pet Keep Getting UTIs?

It can be caused by age, lack of proper hygiene around the genitalia, or abnormal pH levels (acidity or alkalinity in liquid) in the pet’s diet. However, it may also be caused by more severe conditions like bladder stones (hard deposits in the bladder), injuries, tumors, or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).

How Can You Tell If a UTI Has Spread to Kidneys?

You will notice the following symptoms: fever, chills, back, side (flank) or groin pain, abdominal pain, frequent urination, intense, persistent urge to urinate, burning sensation or pain when urinating, nausea, and vomiting.

What Causes Kidney Failure in Pets?

Anything that decreases blood flow through the kidney can cause kidney failure. This includes dehydration from any cause (such as severe vomiting and diarrhea). In addition, heatstroke or other disorders causing massive damage to body tissues can also lead to kidney failure.

How Can I Tell If My Pet Has a Urinary Blockage?

You will notice frequent desire to urinate, producing only a few drops of urine at a time, straining to urinate, abdominal pain, blood in urine, vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, yowling during urination, yowling when touched, collapse, improper urination.

How Do You Know When a UTI Is Gone?

Contact your vet again. You’ll have to take another pee test to ensure your pet is officially rid of that awful UTI. Never assume the urinary tract infection magically vanished on its own because bacteria is “sticky” and isn’t easily removed from the urinary tract.

How Serious Is Pet UTI?

Feline Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) can lead to issues in your pet’s bladder and urethra, often causing the urethra to become blocked or preventing your cat’s bladder from properly emptying. If left untreated, these conditions can even become severe or life-threatening.

Is Urinary Tract Infection in Pets Fatal?

It wouldn’t normally. However, if the infection spreads up into the kidneys, causing pyelonephritis, the resulting kidney damage could easily prove fatal. Pets are prone to kidney failure anyway due to their protein-heavy metabolism, so any additional renal damage is potentially severe.

Can a Dirty Litter Box Cause UTI?

Cats risk squatting over and stepping in old excretions when litter boxes are not cleaned properly. Therefore, bacteria from festering waste can travel up the urethra, causing a urinary tract infection.

How Often Should You Replace Cat Litter?

Twice a week is a general guideline for replacing cat litter, but depending on your circumstances, you may need to replace it every other day or only once a week. For example, if you clean the litter box daily, you might only need to change clumping litter every two to three weeks.

Can I Put Baking Soda in Cat Litter?

Surprisingly, baking soda is an excellent all-natural deodorizer that is safe for cats and can help manage the litter box smell. By mixing a little bit of baking soda with the litter, you can help absorb any urine odors also.

How Often Should a Cat Urinate in 24 Hours?

Healthy cats typically pee between 2 and 4 times each day. But this frequency is also affected by water intake, diet, heat, and humidity.

How Long Can a Cat Go Without Peeing?

While a cat can go 24 to 48 hours without peeing, it’s not good if you notice your cat doesn’t pee as much as he usually does. It’s always best to reach out to your vet whenever you notice a change in your cat’s urination.

How Can I Encourage My Cat to Pee?

All you have to do is hold your pet by his armpits so that his legs hang over the litter box. This can also be done outside, but doing it over a litter box is a saner and more acceptable option! If your cat is not cooperating, try to calm him down by rubbing his back. Once your cat is calm, find the bladder and massage it.

How Many Times a Day Should a Dog Pee?

Adult dogs generally need to urinate three to five times a day, and most vets will recommend a maximum window of between six to eight hours between toilet trips. A younger dog or an older dog might have to pee more often. A dog that won’t pee is just as serious as a dog not pooping. He could be experiencing any number of critical health issues.

How Long Can a Dog Hold Pee Overnight?

Dogs can go for 8 to 10 hours without urinating overnight while sleeping. However, all dogs must be taken out after a meal or a drink, upon waking up, and after a period of play. Urinary frequency in dogs will vary due to age, sex, body size, and overall health.

Can Pets Get UTI from Holding Pee?

Potential health risks are associated with forcing your pet to hold its pee for too long. That’s why extended periods of holding it in can lead to urinary tract infections or urinary crystals and stones. The inability to urine can also lead to behavioral issues.

Is It Normal for a Dog to Pee Every 2 Hours?

Every dog is different, but on average, a healthy dog urinates once every four to six hours. Until they are about 5 or 6 months old, puppies tend to urinate twice as often, every two hours or so.

Why Hasn’t My Dog Peed in 2 Days?

Obstructions in your dog’s bladder or urethra can lead to urinary retention. These obstructions can result from bladder stones, urethral plugs, blood clots, a narrowing of the urethra (called stricture), or even cancerous tumors. In addition, if minerals accumulate in the urinary tract, it can cause an obstruction.

Why Does My Dog Keep Peeing a Little?

If the symptoms your dog exhibits are straining to urinate, frequent accidents, or repeated small puddles when going outdoors, a likely cause is a lower urinary tract issue such as a bladder infection, bladder stones, or cystitis (bladder inflammation).

Will a Dehydrated Pet Urinate?

There are many causes of dehydration in pets, but at the base of all, your animal loses fluid more quickly than they are taking in fluids. All pets lose fluids throughout the day, even breathing evaporates vital fluids, and a large volume is lost each time a pet urinates.

What Does Dog’s Urine with UTI Smell Like?

UTIs come from bacteria in the urine that doesn’t belong there, causing the urine to smell like fish. As soon as you notice this smell, call your veterinarian to schedule an analysis of the urine which looks for crystals, red blood cells, protein, white blood cells, and any other indicators of a urinary issue.

What Color is Pet’s Urine When the Kidneys are Failing?

When kidneys fail, the increased concentration and accumulation of substances in urine lead to a darker color which may be brown, red, or purple. The color change is due to abnormal protein or sugar, high red, and white blood cell levels, and high numbers of tube-shaped particles called cellular casts.

What Foods Cause Struvite Stones in Dogs?

Diet plays a crucial role in preventing bladder stone formation. To decrease the chances of your dog developing bladder stones or having them return once dissolved, you should avoid feeding foods that contain high levels of oxalate, such as spinach, sweet potatoes, organ meat, and brown rice.

What Food Causes UTI in Cats and Dogs?

An abundance of certain minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, often found in grocery store cat and dog food, can cause crystals to form in the urine, sometimes leading to urinary stones. Seek out foods with ingredients designed for optimal urinary tract and kidney health. Veterinarians believe feeding your pet food with limited amounts of these minerals can assist in the dissolution of some types of stones that have formed in the urinary tract.

What Is the Best Food For Cats With Urinary Tract Issues?

A veterinary diet cat food is often the best choice for cats with recurrent urinary tract disease.

What Is the Best Diet for Dogs and Cats with Urinary Tract Infections?

The best diet to prevent UTIs is a raw food diet, full of whole foods that contain B12 vitamins, Vitamin C, and minerals that will support your pet’s immune system. Vitamin C can only do its work when biologically available, and not synthetic essential amino acids are present in every meal the animal gets.

Can Cat With Urinary Problems Eat Tuna?

Tuna contains high concentrations of unsaturated fats that are pretty unhealthy for cats. That is why it can cause a severe vitamin E deficiency, leading to a dangerous condition called “steatitis.” This is a painful disease where the cat’s body becomes inflamed. Tuna is also high in minerals that can cause bladder stones.

Is Salmon Good for Cats with Urinary Tract?

Fish Might Cause Kidney and Urinary Tract Issues. These are high in phosphorus and magnesium and can present problems for cats, especially those with kidney or urinary tract disease. In some cases, sensitive cats can develop cystitis and even urinary blockages.

Can Dry Food Cause UTIs in Pets?

Feeding only dry food makes cats prone to urinary issues. Mimicking that style of diet through feeding wet or even raw food will help ensure that your pet is well-hydrated enough to keep urinary problems at bay.

Will Wet Food Make My Pet Pee More?

Feeding your pet wet food can increase your animal’s water intake, resulting in more urine production.

Is Raw Food Good for Pets With Urinary Problems?

Feeding a raw food diet for any cat or dog, especially those with urinary issues due to the extra moisture present in raw food, is recommended. Raw food is as easy to feed as any canned cat food and, generally speaking, similar in price per serving.

Is Bone Broth Good for Pets with Urinary Problems?

Bone broth provides critical hydration needed by cats and dogs with UTIs and contains nutrients and minerals that can assist in the battle against infections. Additionally, amino acids in bone broth, such as glycine and arginine, alleviate inflammation.

Do Dogs Not Eat When They Have a UTI?

If a dog won’t eat, it is often a sign of sickness. Bacterial or viral infections, urinary tract infections, kidney failure, cancer, and other illnesses or diseases can make your dog pick at their food or lose their appetite altogether.

What Can Dog with Urinary Problems Eat?

To decrease the chances of your dog developing bladder stones, you should avoid feeding foods with high levels of oxalate, such as spinach, sweet potatoes, organ meat, and brown rice. Instead, include foods with lower oxalate levels like apples (peeled), white rice, and meats and fish in their diet.

How Much Water Should a Cat Drink a Day?

Most cats should drink about 4 ounces of water per 5 pounds of body weight daily, give or take an ounce in either direction.

How Much Water Should a Dog Drink a Day?

Most dogs should drink about 1 ounce of water for every pound they weigh daily. That means a 10-pound dog needs about two-thirds of a 16oz bottle of water daily. Active pups or dogs who are pregnant or recently had puppies often need more water per pound of weight.

How Can I Force My Pet to Drink Water?

Place water bowls everywhere, feed your pet wet food, add water or to your pet’s food, add flavor to water and food, use drinking fountains, try different bowls, make a tasty smoothie, offer water from your hand and encourage your pet’s drinking quirks.

Can Lack of Water Cause UTIs in Pets?

Dehydration contributes to painful urinary tract infections. So if you’re not giving your puppy enough water, you’re setting the stage for a UTI. UTIs can lead to bladder stones, permanent kidney damage, and sepsis if not treated early.

What Does It Mean When an Older Dog Starts Drinking a Lot of Water and Peeing?

The common causes of a dog suddenly drinking a lot more water are kidney failure, diabetes mellitus, Cushing’s syndrome, or simply dehydration, all of which need to be addressed. If your senior dog is drinking an excessive amount of water, plan a visit to the vet.

Why Is My Dog Drinking Water But Not Peeing?

When a dog doesn’t pee or is straining to urinate, it can be a sign of a urinary tract infection (however, a UTI might be challenging to diagnose since some dogs have no symptoms and will sometimes just drink more water than usual), bladder stones, kidney disease or an obstruction that’s affecting the outflow.

Can Apple Cider Vinegar Cure UTI in Pets?

Apple cider vinegar is an excellent remedy option for urinary tract infections in pets. It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent. In addition, it can create proper pH balance in your cat’s urine and maintain it, which works to get rid of bacteria. Reduced bacteria will allow your pet’s urinary tract to heal and stay healthy afterward naturally.

Can I Give My Cat Apple Cider Vinegar Every Day?

A teaspoon of diluted apple cider vinegar is safe for dogs and cats. Adding apple cider vinegar to water for ten days can alleviate symptoms and reduce pain caused by a UTI. Even though such a small amount is safe, upping the dosage or using undiluted apple cider vinegar on cats poses health issues. It would be best if you didn’t treat your pet with too much vinegar in any of its forms.

Can I Use a Syringe to Give My Pet Water?

Fresh water should be available at all times. Healthy pets that eat canned food often drink very little because the food contains a high proportion of water. If your animal stops eating, it will need to have additional fluids. Fluids can be administered by mouth using a syringe.

How Do You Give a Pet Cranberry Juice?

If your cat or dog doesn’t enjoy consuming cranberry products and you are trying to treat or prevent a bladder problem, you can feed them commercial treats that feature cranberries in the ingredients list. Or, use a syringe to feed your cat a little cranberry juice.

Does Yogurt Help to Treat UTI In Dogs?

Supplementation with B vitamins and antioxidants in times of stress and offering cooling foods such as raw fruits, vegetables, and yogurt reduce the symptoms of urinary tract infection. Foods that aggravate UTIs include asparagus, spinach, raw carrots, tomatoes, and dairy products.

Are Eggs Good for Pets with Bladder Stones?

Plain-cooked chicken, plain-cooked turkey, and eggs are acceptable for oxalate stone-forming dogs.

How Can I Prevent My Cat from Getting a UTI?

  1. Increase your cat’s water consumption. Make sure their water bowl is clean and filled with fresh water all the time.
  2. Place litter boxes in quiet areas of the house where your cat feels comfortable.
  3. Keep litter boxes clean.

How to Prevent UTIs in Dogs?

UTIs in dogs are highly preventable. To minimize your pet’s risk of contracting a urinary tract infection, take the following steps:

  • Provide fresh, clean water every day. Drinking clean water helps flush away any bacteria accumulated in the urinary tract.
  • Routine grooming, especially around the urinary opening, and regular bathing can help prevent bacteria from entering the urinary system. Keep the area clean and free of debris, scratches, etc.
  • Provide plenty of opportunities for your animal to go outside for a pee break. It’s not good for dogs to hold urine in for long periods.
  • Feed your dog a healthy, well-balanced diet.
  • Probiotic supplements can build up the growth of healthy bacteria in a dog’s body.
  • Vitamin C helps strengthen the immune system. (However, large doses of vitamin C can alter the urine pH and predispose your pet to form bladder stones, so consult with your veterinarian first.)
  • Regular vet check-ups can identify problems before they get serious.

What is the Best Treatment for Urinary Tract Infection in Dogs and Cats?

Antibiotics are the typical treatment for UTIs in dogs, and the vet may also prescribe pain medication because UTIs can be very uncomfortable for dogs. But there are a lot of other effective non-antibiotic medications that help get rid of UTIs, such as Methipower Oral Paste.

Can a Blood Test Detect UTI in Pets?

For both pets, cats, and dogs, checking blood work will help to look for liver disease, abnormalities in kidney function, and blood protein levels. Consult your vet about what test is better for your animal.

Can Urinary Tract Infection Cause Diarrhea in Dogs and Cats?

If your pet stops eating, has vomiting or diarrhea, or worsens UTI symptoms while on medication, call your vet immediately. Follow up with your vet to recheck your pet’s urine sample once the medication is finished. This will help determine if the UTI has cleared up or if your dog needs to continue treatment.

Can Worms Cause Urinary Tract Infections in Pets?

Capillariasis is a type of worm caused by a parasite known as Capillaria plica. The worm infects the urinary bladder and sometimes other parts of the urinary tract.

Why Do Animals Get Recurrent UTIs?

  • Conditions that alter immune function include Cushing’s disease, hypothyroidism, diabetes, and obesity.
  • Kidney or prostate infections, kidney or bladder stones, and bladder tumors.

What Is the Cost of Treating a Urinary Tract Infection in Pets?

The cost to treat a UTI varies, with geographic location being one of the most significant factors to consider. Costs to consider include:

  • Office visit: varies depending on your vet, with an emergency veterinary clinic often costing much more.
  • Medication: medicines can range in price from $25–$100 or even more, depending on the type of antibiotic needed, the length of treatment, and the size of your dog (the larger the dog, the more expensive the medication).
  • Tests: a urinalysis and urine cultures can run up to a few hundred dollars depending on your location, veterinarian, how the urine is collected, and the extent of diagnostic testing required.

What Can Happen If a Pet’s Urinary Tract Problems Go Untreated?

As UTIs may be a symptom of another underlying condition, you must seek veterinary care as soon as possible if you suspect your dog might have a UTI.

Left untreated, a UTI could cause more severe illnesses such as kidney infection (or pyelonephritis) in one or both kidneys.

Untreated UTIs may also cause pets to develop struvite bladder stones. While not all bladder stones are related to infection, this specific type — quite common in dogs — is directly correlated with UTIs. Bladder stones can then predispose your dog to more UTIs, in addition to being incredibly painful.
